Over many centuries it has become traditional to recognise the invaluable contribution madeby those who served the country in its hour of need by the award of campaign and gallantry medals. The exceptional demands made during the Great War meant that over six million men or their next of kin were entitled to receive some form of recognition for their unprecedented contribution during those years of conflict.
