Over a Thousand Years of History
This article provides a timeline of events from Saxon times through to the Elizabethan period, and the arrival of the Earls and Marquesses of Salisbury. In the 19th century the coming of the railway and, in the 20 century, the arrival of manufacturing including the world famous de Havilland Aircraft Company are also included. In the post war period, Hatfield’s second New Town was built. Now in the present-day, Hatfield has become a university town.

This is an article written by Lady Gwendolen Cecil c.1897 for the Hatfield Parish Magazine. It describes the ride, in the 15th century, by the then Bishop of Ely from his manor house to the church of St Etheldreda, it includes events, people and places of that time.
