Sketches of Old Hatfield by Beresford Johnson
(Compiled by Brian G Lawrence)
Beresford Johnson ( b.1905) was a Suffolk man by birth but moved to Hatfield in 1937 to take up a position with the de Havilland Aircraft Company. He and his young wife Doris moved into one of the art deco houses in Birchwood Avenue. Over the following years, Johnson developed a reputation as a local artist of considerable talent, producing numerous paintings and sketches of local scenes. Many date from the 1960s and 70s when parts of Hatfield were being transformed by demolition and redevelopment of much of the old Town and the new Town Centre.
Beresford Johnson continued his much loved hobby well into his 80s.
This small book faithfully reproduces thirty of Beresford Johnson’s sketches of different scenes in what is today known as Old Hatfield. A brief biography and a photograph of the great man himself are also provided.
